UP to 5,000 police service jobs in the North West are at risk because of cuts to local councils and government grants.
That’s the shock conclusion of a new study which forecasts that a total of up to 60,000 police jobs could go in England and Wales.
Worst hit will be civilian support staff, although community police and officers on the beat will also be affected.
The cuts could mean that neighbourhood policing teams could quickly disappear and there would be fewer bobbies on the beat.
The forecast blows apart the Government’s claim that so-called ‘frontline’ services would be protected by the cuts in public services.
If civilian staff lose their jobs, their work will inevitably have to be taken over by uniformed officers, who will then be taken away from operational duties.
As the report author, former Gloucestershire Chief Constable, Tim Brain said: “It would be back to largely a response-orientated police service, very different from the one that we’ve begun to enjoy and experience in recent years.”
