A THOUSAND NEW HOMES AT RISK IN NORTH WEST

A THOUSAND new affordable homes are under threat in the North West as a result of cuts in public spending announced by the Coalition Government.

Amongst them are 219 new homes which were planned for two separate schemes in Manchester – 166 homes in the Ancoats area of the city, as well a second scheme for another 53 homes in Miles Platting.

In Liverpool, 204 affordable new homes are at risk in five separate schemes in Anfield, Knotty Ash, Hunts Cross, Ellergreen and Norris Green.

Together, 16 Kickstart 2 schemes, worth a total of more than £28million, are now under threat across the Region, affecting Blackburn, Bury, Halton, Knowsley, Ribble Valley, Sefton and Warrington.

Another 70 new homes, worth £4.5 million, are also threatened under the Local Authority New Build scheme for the North West.

Councils affected include Wigan, where 35 homes are at risk, Oldham where 12 new homes are at risk and Wirral which has 23 under threat.

The cuts are another major blow to the region’s economy and will hit private housebuilders and threaten further the economic recovery.

North West Regional TUC Secretary Alan Manning said:” If these cuts go-ahead, they will mean thousands more families will be left on the housing waiting lists in the North West, denied a decent roof over their heads.

“The building industry will also pay the price for the bankers recession with contracts cancelled and building workers facing an uncertain future.”
