THE axe has fallen on more than 100 schools in the North West as part of the Con/Dem Coalition Government’s cuts in public spending.
Exactly 104 schools which were due to be built from new or completely refurbished have now been told they must pay the price for the banker’s recession.
Doubts hang over the future of dozens more, including controversial Academies, which Education Secretary Michael Gove says will now be subject to further discussion.
Worst hit in the region is Liverpool where plans for 25 new or refurbished schools have been stopped in their tracks.
Next come Lancashire, Halton and Blackpool where plans for each to get 10 new or refurbished schools have also been axed.
The decision by the Conservative/Lib Dem coalition means disappointment for thousands of children, parents and staff who had been eagerly looking forward to new or dramatically improved facilities and classrooms.
North West TUC Regional Secretary Alan Manning said: “Children are now paying the price for the banker’s recession as a result of this shocking decision which will have major implications both for our economic recovery and the building industry, and for our future prosperity as a skills-based economy.”
Mr Gove, a former journalist with the Times, said he had axed the previous Labour Government’s £55 billion, 20-year-long Building Schools for the Future (BSF) programme, because of “massive overspends, tragic delays, botched construction projects and needless bureaucracy”.
Gove tried to deliberately minimise the impact of the BSF programme by claiming that just 96 new schools had been built nationwide, when in fact, 180 schools have benefited through improved IT, refurbished premises or a whole new school building. Work has been completed on 180 schools and teachers and students are using the new or redeveloped premises right now.
But in future, as a result of the spending axe, other children and their teachers will be forced to try and learn in substandard classrooms which had been due for either replacement or refurbishment.
A Whitehall source said the whole process of scrapping BSF had been “bloody chaos”, according to the Guardian.

The Lib Dems in Liverpool should be hung out to dry for this – they are the ones to blame for every classroom that wont now get improved. Disgusting.
