CIVIL service leaders have warned that public spending cuts will hit services in the North West.
And the PCS union has called for a full and honest debate about the role of the public sector in the North West economy.
Peter Middleman, North West Regional Secretary for the Public & Commercial Services Union, said in a statement: ” As the biggest civil service union we do not accept that the huge spending cuts announced today by the coalition government are necessary or desirable.
“Nor do we believe it is credible for the government to say it can protect public sector jobs and services while taking the axe to departments in this way.
“Any talk of a recruitment freeze will in our view merely compound the impact to services of the tens of thousands of jobs which have gone in the civil service since 2004.
“If the government were serious about tackling the deficit it could do so at a stroke by acting immediately to close the widening tax gap which sees more than £120 billion in revenue lost to the UK economy every year.
“Any serious economist knows that the north west of England relies more heavily than any other on public sector jobs.
“Accordingly we would welcome the opportunity for a full and honest debate, involving other unions, about the public sector and its role in the economy. Sadly however, the government appears intent on short-circuiting that by cutting first and asking questions later.”
