CON/DEM COALITION GOVERNMENT AGREE ON £6BILLION CUTS FOR PUBLIC SERVICES

CUTS of £6billion in public services this year have been agreed by the new Conservative/Liberal Democrat coalition government.

The move has been condemned as a “hammer blow to the North West economy”, by TUC Regional Secretary, Alan Manning.

He warned that the cuts would threaten the fragile recovery and throw thousands of public servants out of work, with a knock-on impact on private sector suppliers.

The cuts have been agreed by new Conservative Prime Minister David Cameron and his deputy, Lib Dem Nick Clegg as part of their coalition deal.

Mr Manning warned: “Cuts of this magnitude will have a devastating effect on peoples lives in the North West and the public services upon which they rely.

“We have continually warned that now is not the time to take money out of our economy, when we are still struggling to get back to growth.

“These cuts will mean that thousands of public servants will lose their jobs here in the North West this year. But there will also be a huge knock-on to the private sector which depends on the public sector for so much of their business. “

Mr Manning added: “With a coalition now in power in Whitehall, we will build a strong and determined coalition of  more than one million union members in the North West to defend  the interests of working people and  their communities from attack.”
