WOULD-BE MPs URGED TO BACK NORTH WEST TUC CAMPAIGN ‘PROUD TO SERVE THE PUBLIC’

WOULD-be MPs from all three main political parties are being urged to back the ‘Proud to serve the public’ campaign.

The North West TUC has written to almost 200 candidates from the Lib Dem, Conservative and Labour Parties asking them to support our campaign to protect and promote public services in the Region.

The TUC says public services are a vital part of the North West economy and threatened cuts in spending will only cause higher unemployment and increase the money spent on benefits.

The campaign has already won celebrity backing from Coronation Street’s Bill Tarmey, who plays Jack Duckworth, and now it is bidding for support from would-be politicians before polling day.

The TUC say public services create jobs, stimulate growth, protect the most vulnerable and are valued by millions of hard-working people in the North West.

The campaign says: “Public services did not cause the recession. Why should public servants – and the public they are proud to serve – now pay the price for the recklessness and greed of the financiers and bankers?”

North West TUC Secretary Alan Manning said: “The public have a right to know what politicians plan for the public services we all value and depend on.

“We have written to candidates from all three main parties in our region asking them to support our campaign and offering to highlight the work of any public servants who they, as would-be MPs, particularly value. We will publicise the responses on our web site.

“The future of public services is at the crossroads at this election – voters in every North West constituency should know which direction each candidate will take.

“Will it be massive cuts which will only lengthen the dole queues and make life worse for millions of people – or investing in public services as an engine of recovery and fairness for people here in the North West?

“We hope that all parties will respond positively, so that people know where they stand.”
