THE Conservatives have been urged to think again over their plans to scrap the North West Regional Development Agency, which has created 222,000 jobs in the region in the last eleven years.
The call from TUC chief Steve Farley follows Conservative business spokesman Ken Clarke’s announcement that a future Tory Government would axe the RDA.
Mr Clarke had ordered a review of the controversial policy just a few weeks ago amid widespread confusion over the Tories’ precise plans.
Then Mr Clarke appeared to finally give in to pressure from the Tory party’s right wing to include abolition in a future Conservative Government’s plans.
Both sides of industry have now warned the Conservatives that the fragile recovery will be hit by abolishing the RDA, a key public service architect of job creation in the North West.
Steve Farley, Chair of the North West TUC, said: “The Conservatives are now completely isolated in wanting to scrap the North West Regional Development Agency and threaten our recovery from recession.
“The North West CBI, Institute of Directors and British Chambers of Commerce have joined with the North West TUC in opposing the scrapping of the Agency which has created 222,000 jobs in the North West in the last eleven years.
“Both sides of industry recognise that abolishing the RDA would prolong the recession and hamper our recovery. Its not too late for the Tories to change their minds – and put petty political ideology aside in the interests of the North West.”
