Madness to cut public spending now

It would be madness to cut public spending when economic recovery is so fragile, says North West TUC Regional Secretary Alan Manning.

He was commenting on figures published by the Office for National Statistics which show that the UK economy is estimated to have grown by 0.1 per cent in the final quarter of 2009.

Mr Manning said: “These figures show just how fragile the economy is – it would be madness to cut public spending now.

“The 2.5 million people currently without work in Britain will draw little comfort from the news that the UK is now officially out of recession.

“The immediate task is to bring some much needed stability to the economy and get people back to work, ensuring we achieve sustainable growth. Then we need to look at our national income and the billions lost in tax evasion. Cutting public spending is no answer to the serious problems we face.”
